Fly & Drive

Flying can be expensive, but add on the cost of a rental car and you often haven’t got anything left to eat on. That’s why I am digging Aer Lingus’s Fly & Drive package deal, which includes return U.S. airfare and a one-week car rental for a seriously low price – $399. The deal includes flights from New York JFK to Dublin between February 1 – March 10.

Fly & Drive packages are also offered from Boston, Chicago and San Francisco and for alternate dates between now and the end of May, but the prices do go up from there. For instance, you can be in Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day (March 17, for anyone keeping score) from Boston for $469, or wait for warmer weather and fly all the way from San Francisco in May for $699. Yowsa. Including a car rental? That’s saving a bundle, folks.

Aer Lingus also offers to add on accommodation for $69 a day, although you can definitely do better than that if you’re a hosteler or staying in B&Bs.

I have always believed, and still do, that the quality you get flying with Aer Lingus for the price is nearly unmatchable, especially on long haul flights between U.S. cities and Ireland.

When: February 1 – May 31, 2010

Seems like a great offer indeed, and I hope Aer Lingus extends it into the year. Car rental in Ireland, especially paying in US dollars, is an unpleasant surprise – along with the other surprise which is that your US car insurance won’t cover your driving, so you have to buy the v. expensive rental company insurance.

Indeed, Frank. The last time I hired a car in Ireland, daily insurance was nearly the daily cost of the car! Talk about unpleasant.

It’s a good offer. Too cheap means too risky. When it comes to human safety and lives, I would not risk anything. the price is fair enough.
